Sudden cardiac arrest claims millions of lives every year. AEDs are portable electronic devices that administer electric shocks to restore normal heart contractions after life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias or ventricle fibrillation. The Philips HeartStart OnSite AED is simple enough to use for people who are non-medically trained. The AED tests the victim to see if defibrillation is necessary, and if so, guides the user through the process with audio and visual prompts. Defibrillation within the first five minutes of cardiac arrest can improve the chance of survival by up to 90 percent.
At least eleven states already have laws requiring health clubs to have an AED. The states are: Arkansas, California, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Rhode Island.

LEADING ROWING COMPANY LAUNCHES THEIR LATEST INNOVATION:
THE CONCEPT2 SKIERG
Concept2, the leading manufacturer of racing oars and rowing machines, has introduced their newest product: the Concept2 SkiErg. Similar to the Concept2 Indoor Rower, the SkiErg helps athletes build strength and endurance in a sport-specific motion.
An ergometer, or “erg”, is a device that measures work. Every SkiErg includes a Performance Monitor that gives skiers accurate, comparable feedback. This allows the user to assess output, monitor progress, and compare scores with others.
The SkiErg offers terrific exercise for the entire body. Each pull engages the legs, arms, shoulders and core in a downwards “crunch,” using body weight to help accelerate the handles. Each pull finishes by extending the arms down along the hips with knees partly bent.
Nordic skiing is a low-impact, high calorie-burning exercise suitable for all ages and abilities. The motion on the SkiErg can also be easily adapted to athletes with lower leg injuries. Kris Freeman, ten-time National Champion and two-time Olympic Nordic skier, has been using the SkiErg to rehabilitate from recent leg surgery.
